Our partner Adrian Esquivel has published a feature article on Intellectual Property Magazine on the topic of Geographical Indications (GIs). The article is accesible to subscribers on this link.
In his piece, entitled A Brave Old World? Mr Esquivel argues that, as the United States retreats from global trade, the European sui generis approach to GI's (called old world approach) is winning traction all over the world, including China, India, Latin America and Africa. This said, until the US buys into the system, harmonisation of the GI system worldwide is unlikely.
Mr Esquivel is an expert in GIs and more particularly in Spanish wines (in his spare time too).
